Summary: | Paul understands the soteriological term "God’s righteousness" in an eminently relational way: The δικαιοσύνη θεοῦ denotes God’s own saving justness, by virtue of which he "justifies" (rather: rectifies) sinners who have turned away from him, i. e., places them in a well-ordered, salvific relationship with him (δικαιοῦν, δικαιοῦσθαι). The sinners’ rectification takes place in and through Christ, the "mercy seat" (ἱλαστήριον) appointed by God. Therefore, the theological concept of "justice" or "righteousness", which has no analogy because of the Christ event, is incompatible with other notions of justice or righteousness, especially with the idea of "iustitia distributiva" and the satisfaction theories based on it. |
