Description
Summary:In the wide-ranging debate caused by the emergence of mysticism in the modern sense, historiography has habitually given pride of place to harsh criticisms of this major trend, for which "the mystical" is no longer only an attibute but a substantive, representing a new discipline, notwithstanding its complex genealogy. Now there is likewise dispute among those favourable to this form of modern spirituality. Furthermore, critics concentrate on the contributions of the Carmelites, the Augustinians or the Jesuits, of seculars such as Fénelon or lay persons like Jeanne Guyon, while paying little attention to the Franciscan approach. Here we will treat, not only of the point of view of a Franciscan, Paulin d'Aumale, whose complete works have now been published through our efforts, but also of the properly theological horizon of the question of unconditional love (pur amour), where we give priority to the approach of two Parisian_university masters, Godfrey of Fontaines and John Duns Scotus.
