| Summary: | Mark 6,45-53 contains a well-known irregularity, with Bethsaida stated as the destination of a lake crossing (6,45) but Gennesaret identified as the landing spot (6,53). Four groups of potential explanations of this irregularity have been identified: harmonizing, source-critical, text-critical, and narrative-critical. This study surveys the above explanations, updating S.H. Smith’s analogous 1996 discussion. Similar to Smith, the narrative-critical approach is found to form the optimal line of inquiry. Its development since 1996 is discussed and its critique addressed. This explanation is reinforced by the results of redaction criticism and supported by insights from narratology. |
