Description
Summary:The research method used to compile the data used in this article is the documentary method. This article represents an attempt to explore and understand the difficulties the stroke patient faces, and to celebrate the use of the pastoral conversation as a rehabilitative tool. The article explores the physical and mental deficits that result from a stroke and the patient's emotional reactions to them. The basic emotional reactions are fear, anger, depression, and feelings of isolation or loneliness. An attempt is then made to explore the possible meanings of the experience for the stroke patient. It is suggested that a commonly perceived meaning of the experience is conviction of sin. Through the pastor's understanding encounter with the stroke patient, the patient's experience can take on a variety of possible new meanings, most of them more positive. Forgiveness can be mediated as the pastor uses his own unique resources to enable the person to negotiate new “covenants” as a basis for his relationships to family, friends, and God. Pastoral resources discussed are not traditional resources, but creative human resources that the pastor possesses because of who he is.
