| Summary: | One of the greatest problems that besets the modern world is the lack of mysticism. Rationalism and scientism deny the validity of anything which is non-productive technologically or materially, resulting in unqualified activism and the glorification of the measurable and replicable. Even within traditional religions a paroxysm of pragmatism and the visible is evident. However, recent times have witnessed renewed interest in the phenomenon of mysticism which is indicative of a refusal to accept what can be seen and measured as indicative of reality. An increasing number of scholarly and scientific studies by theoreticians of mysticism have appeared, the aim of which is to analyse and elucidate the nature and problematic of mysticism from within a critical-philosophical perspective. The issues raised are particularly pertinent and can contribute to a variegated yet global mystical consciousness which is vitally important in this pluralistic era. |
