Summary: | This article constitutes a description and an analysis of the ancient Inviting Home of the soul ceremony still practised in China. The ceremony is conducted to invite home the souls of those who died some distance from the ancestral home. This ceremony constitutes part of the institution of filial piety and the strength of the traditional institution of the family is demonstrated in the need for unity of the living and the dead. Thus, when the soul's presence is divined as having entered the ancestral home, the atmosphere of the ceremony changes from a religious ceremony into a family celebration. |
