Summary: | This small monograph pays tribute to Raul Hilberg’s lifetime of Holocaust research. The two essays by Hilberg that are reproduced here are less well known. A selection of primary sources accompany them, while historiographical essays by Christopher Browning and Peter Hayes not only update and revise Hilberg’s work, but also illustrate how historical interpretations reflect a dialogue across generations., Hilberg’s oeuvre on the bureaucratization of mass murder included these two essays, “German Railroads/Jewish Souls,” (an article published in 1976 in Society) and “The Bureaucracy of Annihilation” (a chapter appearing in 1989 in Unanswered Questions). |
