Description
Summary:In March of 2020, Holocaust scholars and Church historians celebrated a milestone: the long-awaited and long-overdue opening of the Vatican archives of the pontificate of Pius XII was imminent. Public and scholarly expectations of finding new revealing documents related to Pope Pius XII and the Holocaust were flying high. Ever since Rolf Hochhuth’s 1963 play “The Deputy” a fierce debate had raged: some accused Pius XII of silence in the face of atrocity, while others argued that he did what he could to save lives. But expectations of settling this debate were soon put on hold: after only one week the spreading pandemic closed the archives again., The German theologian Klaus Kühlwein was one of the lucky few who had gained access to some of the new sources even before the official opening.
