When it first appeared in 1981, scholars praised the book as a comprehensive, pioneering work focusing on Vichy’s exclusionary anti-Jewish policies. It challenged the assertion that the Vichy regime’s actions against the Jews resulted from Nazi directives and that Marshal Philippe Pétain’s government had largely protected French Jews from deportation. Instead, Marrus and Paxton’s research revealed the autonomous and wide-ranging nature of French actions within the context of German occupation. |
