Summary: | Sara J. Brenneis’ work is of particular relevance in Spanish politics and society. Spain has been reviewing (with its ups and downs) its recent historical past ever since its Historical Memory Law came into force in 2007. The law encouraged among Spaniards discussion about the controversies of the Franco regime, and since the exhumation and reburial of the dictator in October 2019, the topic has spiked an even bigger interest in the public. As part of this debate, Mauthausen has become a relatively common point of reference in Spanish newspapers and documentaries for the horrors Spaniards experienced during the Second World War., The topicality of the subject is not the most important part of Brenneis’ contribution, however. |
