Summary: | This is not just another narrative of what happened to Jews in France under the Vichy regime and the Nazi occupation. Political scientist Wolfgang Seibel focuses closely on negotiations between Vichy and the Germans in 1942 and 1943 over French participation in the deportation of Jews from France. Other matters fall into place around this central concern, resulting in an authoritative look at the “French paradox.” Vichy France lent crucial assistance to the deportations in 1942, then hesitated. In the end, France had the third-lowest Jewish fatality rate (25 percent) in Nazi-occupied Europe—after only Denmark and Italy., Seibel bases his discussion on extensive published German and French records and on detailed analysis of decision-making. |
