Summary: | Klaus-Peter Friedrich summarizes the findings of his research on his book's final page, as well as in a short English-language précis. His conclusions doubtless will conform to the expectations of many Western readers. In the English we read: “the underground press's perception [of the genocide] derived from the widespread belief that ethnic Poles were the only real victims of the war.” The death camps were seen to foreshadow a “coming annihilation of the Poles”; the Jews' suffering and death deserved attention “only if they could be interpreted in the sense of an existential threat to the Poles” (p. 221). |
