Description
Summary:Götz Aly’s book on the relationships between robbery and racial war under National Socialism has won commercial success but also generated criticism. Aly develops a complex argument about how Germany financed World War II in part by plundering the resources of the territories it occupied and of its own allies, minimizing the burden on its own people. Aly believes this helps explain the surprising acceptance of Hitler’s government even late in the war, arguing that wealth redistribution helped buy social acquiescence., Much of this loot came from the robbery of Jewish property, which he estimates came to some five percent of the Reich’s total income between 1939 and 1945, a more significant amount than it might seem, as every Mark received enabled the government to borrow a similar amount.
