Description
Summary:International recognition and moral or even monetary reward for individuals who risked their well-being, freedom, and even lives to aid jews siated for destruction may be among connsiderations that have attracted a number of persons whose representation of the past invites scrutiny. Some of these have not only achieved such rewards through less than the most rigorous investigation by agencies honoring the heroes, but have also had the effect of garnering political capital for forces that would exploit the past for broader ends. This article documents the tale of a jew and a Gentile who have contrasted Hungarian complicity in the Final solution with purported Romanian innocence. The forces above include denlers of the Holocaust in Romania who wish to resurrect the reputation of that country's wartime leader General lon Antonescu.
