Summary: | This article describes the experiences of an American Army unit, the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion, around Dachau in April–May 1945. The men of the 522nd were the only Japanese American soldiers to fight in Germany. This paper draws on information from interviews conducted with twelve of these veterans who were interviewed as part of an oral history project conducted by the Hawaii Holocaust Project. The men's recollections of Da-chau are recounted along with several critical research issues that must be addressed before a definitive history of this little-known unit can be written. |
