Summary: | The year 1934 was crucial in the evolution of Nazi power and control. It was also a pivotal, crucial year in the developing Church Struggle. During that year a number of ‘early warning signals’ were sounded among the churches concerning the gravity and ominous character of the new political and social order. Three of these these ‘signals’ are cited in this essay — Bishop George Bell's Ascensiontide letter of 10 May 1934 which was sent to ecumenical church leaders in twenty countries, including Germany; the Barmen Synod of 29–31 May 1934; the Fanō, Denmark Ecumenical Conference of 24–30 August 1934. |
