Description
Summary:The article highlights some key tenets and discusses striking examples taken from what are commonly referred to as the ‘theological oracles’ of Late Antiquity. Features such as apophatism and the notion of divine selfgeneration are particularly evident in the fifth-century oracular collection called the Tuebingen Theosophy after the city where its most important manuscript is kept. The work records some pagan Greek oracles which were thought to foretell Christian revelation and therefore represents an attempt at reconciling traditional religion and Christianity. In addition, the author offers a critical reassessment of recent literature on the subject. She discusses, in particular, a short volume by J.M. Nieto Ibáñez (Cristianismo y profecías de Apolo: los oráculos paganos en la Patrística griega [siglos II-V]), Madrid, Editorial Trotta, 2010) and takes into account in her analysis the results of a conference which was organized by Helmut Seng and held in Frankfurt am Main in July 2012.
