Summary: | Islam holds a relevant place within the historical and eschatological system of tribulations outlined by Joachim of Fiore. Indeed, Islam is identified as responsible for the fourth, sometimes the fifth, and the sixth of the seven past and future persecutions suffered by the Church. This paper focuses on the Sarraceni as key players in the fourth persecution, spanning the first century of Islamic history. The analysis of the occurrences of terms related to this context within the Abbot’s works led to the identification of his sources of information - initially historiographical, then polemical texts - and the delineation of significant evolution from a military and political conception of the deeds done by the gens Sarracenorum to the perception of a religious characterization of the secta Sarracenorum. The typology of the sources and Joachim’s usage of them also revealed that his interest towards Islam was based on cognitive reason rather than ideological aim. |
