| Σύνοψη: | No certain knowledge is available regarding the production and reception of the Syriac version of the Themistian oration On Friendship. It is nevertheless possible to obtain some information from a linguistic and stylistic comparison of the two texts and even more from a study of changes made by the translator to the original text. Such an analysis has revealed the intention of censuring material explicitly tied to pagan religion and a style of life extraneous to Christianity whereas other references to classical Greek culture and literature underwent only generic revision and no Christian distortions of the text are present. On the whole, the translation denotes a greater interest in the rhetorical aspects of the text than in the contents which seem to have been altered only to the point of making them acceptable and understandable in a different cultural and religious context. |
