Description
Summary:The paper analyses several Commentarii, pamphlets and homilies dedicated to Our Father between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries (from the texts of Alexander of Hales to the texts of Girolamo Savonarola). The sources (philosophical and exegetical treatises, hagiographies, sermons, devout treatises, mystical writings) were selected both on the basis of their influence and circulation and in order to trace the main recurring themes over a medium time span. The texts made it possible to retrieve at least the main lines of the religious and cultural process that assigned to the Pater noster a very significant role in the spiritual life of the individual thus bringing the private dimension of prayer into alignment with the collective (liturgical) dimension and causing the christifideles to become aware of the fact that they could enter into a priviledged individual relationship with the Creator through the recitation (vocal or mental) of the Pater noster. The Pater noster, therefore considered to be a sort of breviarium Evangelii, took on the stature of an instrument for internalizing the relationship between creature and Creator and contributed in no small way to imparting personality to the individual conscience, with all the burdens of freedom and responsibility this would imply.
