Description
Summary:Mysticism is here examined from the point of view of functional psychology. The "reality" involved in mysticism is not to be discovered by asking whether the mystical experience yields evidence of some metaphysical entity arbitrarily defined. The outcome of a mystical experience depends upon the particular social environment which is emotionally appropriated and interpreted. The article pleads for a "free" as opposed to a "fettered" mysticism. Such free mysticism would yield a joyous, creative attitude quite compatible with a critical and practical interpretation of environment.
