| Summary: | The campaign against the teaching of evolution is a phase of a movement to identify Christianity with a dogmatic system which is being undermined by modern critical scholarship. In order to preserve religious faith, it is proposed to outlaw certain doctrines. The leaders in the campaign fail to understand or appreciate the moral and religious value of the scientific spirit. Their program would defraud future generations of knowledge which can be attained only by free scientific research. It would be disastrous to religion itself to stand sponsor for any such repression of freedom of teaching. The method pursued substitutes political campaigning for a dispassionate quest for the truth, and introduces malignant factors into the discussion of religion. A type of religion which distrusts candid critical inquiry betrays a suspicious weakness. A virile religion welcomes and interprets the best knowledge. |
