Summary: | When Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church on 13 March 2013, two things stood out immediately for me. First, he is a Latin American, an Argentinian of Italian descent outside of the European ecclesiastical establishment, from where popes are normally chosen. Second, he chose the name 'Francis', after St Francis of Assisi, as his papal name. Never in the history of the church have we had a pope from Latin America. And neither have we had a pope by the name of 'Francis'. |
