Volker Gerhardt pone a tema in chiave panteistica il rapporto tra il senso di autonomia personale e il senso divino del tutto. L’idea di un Dio personale si legittima a partire dalla forza di immaginazione di fronte alla totalità del reale. Le religioni effettive sono rappresentazioni immaginative del nucleo centrale dei pensieri sul divino. With Theodor Lessing it must be recognized that the distinctive feature of historical knowledge is not the empirical description, but the mythopoetic will. Dieter Henrich articulates this imaginative faculty in a rigorously transcendental way, showing how the subject endowed with self-awareness inevitably knows of a founding cause, unavailable to the manner of objects, but evident as a prerequisite for "my" self-representation. Volker Gerhardt puts the relationship between the sense of personal autonomy and the divine sense of the whole as a pantheistic theme. The idea of a personal God is legitimized starting from the power of imagination in the face of the totality of reality.
