Summary: | Vernon Broyles reflects on his twenty-plus years as a pastor of Presbyterian Church in the United States congregations in North Carolina and Alabama in the midst of the Civil Rights struggle and the schismatic campaign within the PCUS that brought into being the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). The latter conflict, fought over issues of orthodoxy, purity, biblical interpretation and church property, provides some lessons in retrospect for dealing with many of the internal conflicts that trouble our own Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) today. Having revisited some of his own history as a pastor, Broyles attempts to lift out some lessons for us today regarding what it means, at the core of our polity and the vows we take, to call ourselves “Presbyterian." |
