Summary: | Holy Cross priest Daniel Hudson edited the Ave Maria weekly magazine for fiftyfour years between 1875 and 1929. During this period his oversight saw the magazine exhibit a "progressive orthodoxy" through its articles and editorials. Hudson and his authors generally held progressive views of social needs while simultaneously defending the orthodox faith in issues ranging from the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore in 1884 to the condemnation of Modernism in 1907. Hudson was open to various viewpoints, believing that bishops were autonomous, but always upheld the institutional church and it teachings. A study of his work and longevity at the helm of Ave Maria provides great insight into a leading voice in American Catholic media during a pivotal period of American Catholic history. |
