Summary: | After a brief indication of the theme of peace in the monastic tradition this essay traces the development of Thomas Merton's understanding of peace in tandem with his changing concept of the role of the monk in contemporary society. The main argument of this paper is that Merton refined his understanding of how to be a peace witness and peacemaker as part of his larger search to be faithful to his monastic vision. His thinking and action in the cause of peace offers clues to those who align themselves with that same cause but not as vowed monks. |
