Summary: | Two divergent views regarding the role of emotional feelings exist among psychologists and Christians. These are that (a) behavior should follow from and be consistent with feelings, and (b) feelings are primarily reactions to behavior. A case of a male suffering from cyclic negative and positive emotional states as a consequence of deviant behavior and alternating comparison groups is analyzed from the perspectives of a cognitive consistency principle and the theory of social comparison. The implication is that behaviors and emotions stabilize when Christ is the focus of comparison. |
