Description
Summary:The Protevangelion of James was composed in the second century, but from the fourth century onwards, writers reproduced parts of this apocryphal work, although they dissociated themselves from it either by not acknowledging it as one of their sources or by altering the narrative’s details.1 Writers have attempted to add historicity to the text in order to signify the events that served the Divine Oikonomia, which resulted in variations of the Greek original text. These additions or alterations to the original narrative that reveal the gradual interest towards the early life of Mary and demonstrate the ways Christian texts appreciated the apocryphal parents of the Virgin from the fourth century onwards.
