Summary: | The article discusses the challenges and benefits of teaching aesthetics of religion in higher education. This includes both the analytical approach and religious aesthetics as basic material for creative assignments that enrich all teaching about religion. As such, aesthetics of religion has the potential for transcending the predominant focus on texts not only in research but also in the teaching methods typically used in the humanities. To introduce the vast array of potential teaching strategies, the article presents a collection of didactical techniques for the classroom as well as for field trips by drawing on the published teaching experiences of scholars of religion complemented by contributions from authors of the handbook. It includes specific assignments regarding material text practices, auditory skills, and aesthetic perceptions in museum spaces along with exercises and field protocols to train the students’ bodies to observe and analyze the many multi-layered aesthetic practices in religious contexts. |
