Summary: | In this book, Leland Royce Harper argues for the existence of a multiverse, a gigantic, perhaps infinite, collection of universes; and furthermore, that the existence of a multiverse entails deism. It is a bold thesis, but can it withstand counter-arguments? Certainly much of what he says is open to criticism.Harper puts forward a number of arguments for the existence of a multiverse. For an atheist it might help to solve the fine-tuning problem, i.e. why the constants of physics seem ‘chosen’ so as to permit the development of life. The constants are not chosen, but all permutations are instantiated in different universes of the multiverse. However, the matter is not so clear-cut. Thus, were the multiverse theory true (and I think Harper exaggerates the support for this in the scientific community and fails to take into account the speculative nature of the theories involved), would we expect to find ourselves in a universe quite so ultra-designed as ours appears to be (a point made by, for example, Robin Collins, Tim Lawson, and myself)? |
