Description
Summary:Professor James R. Harrison’s Reading Romans with Roman Eyes is a collection of articles on the Roman imperial context of the letter to the Romans. The book consists of an introduction, conclusion, four new chapters (2-3, 6, 8) and four previously published and reworked articles (4-5, 7, 9). The volume focuses on how the Gentile addressees in the city of Rome, influenced by the value system reflected in the material surroundings (inscriptions, epitaphs, monuments, etc.), understood Paul’s letter. By offering a thick social description the volume seeks to fill a lacuna in scholarship on Romans—a welcome project, which the volume accomplishes prolifically. Harrison makes the healthy choice to focus on ‘reader response’ instead of tackling the difficult question of Paul’s awareness of the current situation in the city of Rome and the notoriously complex issue of authorial intent (although this perspective does not always hold, p. 56).
