Description
Summary:Many commentators have understood some of the salient themes in Luke 24:36-53 and John 20:24-9 in one of two ways. One group argues that the evangelists had antidocetic intentions. Since docetic viewpoints were prevalent at the time of their compositions, the evangelists emphasized the physicality of the resurrection to reaffirm what they perceived as the orthodox stance. As J. D. Atkins observes: ‘It has proven so attractive that it has most often treated not as a hypothesis but as a historical given: the mere fact that the evangelists refer to the risen Jesus in physical terms is considered sufficient evidence of antidocetic intention’ (p. 5). Another group maintains that the evangelists were accurate in describing the original testimonies of the apostles’ encounters with the risen Jesus, but the latter merely appeared to be physical.
