Her argument is presented as follows : In Chapter 1 Andruska presents the current state of research on the Song of Songs and delineates five different positions: allegorical/spiritual versus literal; Solomon as lover; married versus unmarried lovers; mutual love or troubled relationship; and the celebration of love versus wisdom. She summarizes the respective positions in a concise and comprehensible manner. She, in turn, interprets the Song as a ‘literal depiction of love between two lovers’ (p. 4). Solomon is not the male lover and the lovers are not married. Their relationship is depicted as ‘mutual, equal, and redemptive for gender relations’ (p. 10). Even if the Song belongs to the love song/poetry genre, Andruska clarifies its relation to wisdom and suggests that ‘the influence of the wisdom genre on the Song was actually pervasive, running throughout the book’ (p. 11). This type of love is ‘a wise love’ (p. 12), she states. | ||
