| Summary: | This relatively short volume by the author who has otherwise written extensively on ritual in the Hebrew Bible focuses on violent rituals in that canonical set of documents. After an introductory chapter, the author looks at a sample of violent rituals that are prescribed in legal materials, noting specifically probative and punitive dimensions of such rituals, while at the same time also highlighting that many of the rites of this type do not have these dimensions. The chapter also includes a discussion of rites of mass eradication (herem). In the following chapter, examples of where violent rites are narrated in the Hebrew Bible are brought forward for scrutiny. From there, the author moves into considering the characteristics of violent rites that are envisioned with the future in view in their literary setting. Subsequently, the author explores ritual inversion and rites that militate against harmful effects of violence. A chapter on cases where rituals can be either beneficial or negative depending on circumstances, in contrast to rituals that are always of either kind, then follows. Finally, an analysis is made of how violent rites may impact social relationships on the basis of self-presentation of the biblical text(s), and a conclusion that summarizes the issues discussed rounds up the book. |
