Description
Summary:After the Discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, who was decisively helped by the Dominican friar Diego de Deza, the members of the Order of Santo Domingo were the first to fight for justice in defence of the dignity of the indigenous in the conquest of America during the first decades of Spanish settlement in the New World. In addition, with their theological and philosophical debate, those Dominicans questioned the "Just Titles" of occupation by Spain of the distant overseas lands. Moreover, they were also the pioneers who tried to put into practice the isolationist evangelizing thesis, followed later by other religious orders. The names of Antonio Montesinos, Pedro de Córdoba, Bartolomé de las Casas, Francisco de Vitoria, Tomás de Berlanga, Domingo de Soto, Melchor Cano and many others form an outstanding group of precursors who were ahead of time when it came to proclaiming themselves defenders of human rights.
