| Summary: | Considering the post-synodal apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia five years after its promulgation invites us to reflect on love, the motivating source of the bond between couples, the expression of which predates Christianity and which, from antiquity, has sought expression in the mystery of revelation. Today, this intention is mainly threatened by an individualism that suppresses sensitivity for others, by the mass media that rarely promote a relevant ideal of the couple or the family, and by the new information and communication technologies that - although they facilitate fast and easy access to news, novelties, and research - are vulnerable to spreading tendentious or malicious claims. At the same time, this article underlines the fact that the marital commitment is not limited to the couple, as we well know, but also extends to the children, for whom parents have an irrevocable responsibility regardless of the conditions of their conception and likewise an obligation to shape them in fulfilling the responsibilities they will bear towards the society that they will depend upon if they are to sustain themselves successfully. Along with all of this, both members of the couple must remain mindful of their own welfare so that each can develop their own potential, always balancing the personal with the shared good. Furthermore, the article reports on some of the ways in which the marriage bond is formalized in Mexican society and how the pandemic has affected them. Finally, it shares some of the steps being taken to follow the pope’s proposal by both ecclesial institutions as well as committed lay persons, initiatives that, although few in number, show the desire to actively support human welfare in the light of our shared faith. |
