Description
Summary:On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia (2016), Pope Francis called for a year of reflection on the document to deepen our understanding of its contents, to reread the text to rediscover the good news it contains for couples and families. In this context, we must ask how Amoris Laetitia has influenced theological reflection and pastoral practice in the church. The article explores this issue in the context of Colombia, whose reception of the document generally mirrors that of other Latin American countries. The author proposes a socio-anthropological reading of the Colombian religious situation and the panorama of various ways in which couples and families are constituted in Colombia. It then gives a reading of Amoris Laetitia and of the Synods on the Family (2014-2015) that preceded its publication, highlighting the good news for couples and for families. It concludes by reflecting on the ways in which Colombian families and couples are responding to and could further respond to the document’s teaching. This is situated within a renewed theological understanding of synodality and its practical consequences in the five years following Amoris Laetitia’s publication.
