| Summary: | The rapid and constant increase in the aging rate of the population, with the consequent increase in the number of elderly people characterized by comorbidities, frailty and a significant loss of autonomy, represents a challenge for contemporary society and for bioethical reflection. Faced with the major problems that occur in the care of the elderly (ageism, depersonalization and depression, insufficient treatment of pain, various forms of abuse), a possible answer can be sought in the contamination of the approach of palliative care to care for the elderly. This choice, by promoting patient-centered care, attentive to caring rather than curing, to holistic management of the person (to his "total pain") could constitute an adequate response to the current negative elements in assistance to the elderly, guaranteeing the best possible quality of life, including the dimension of life satisfaction, pain control, overcoming ageism and preventing abuse. Il rapido e costante aumento del tasso di invecchiamento della popolazione, con il conseguente aumento del numero di anziani caratterizzati da comorbilità, fragilità e una significativa perdita di autonomia, rappresenta una sfida per la società contemporanea e per la riflessione bioetica. Di fronte alle grandi problematiche che si verificano nell'assistenza agli anziani (ageismo, spersonalizzazione e depressione, trattamento insufficiente del dolore, varie forme di abuso), una possibile risposta può essere ricercata nella contaminazione dell'approccio delle cure palliative alla cura degli anziani. Questa scelta, promuovendo una cura centrata sul paziente, attenta al prendersi cura (caring) piuttosto che sul curare (cure), alla gestione olistica della persona (al suo "dolore totale") potrebbe costituire una risposta adeguata agli attuali elementi negativi nell'assistenza all'anziano, garantendo la migliore qualità di vita possibile, compresa la dimensione della soddisfazione di vita, il controllo del dolore, il superamento dell'ageismo e la prevenzione degli abusi. |
