Summary:The topic of marriage is currently a heated one in a wide variety of social contexts. Marriage, its form and design, as well as its meaning are discussed, if not disputed, in many different ways. From a historical-theological perspective, marriage is probably the most reflected form of interpersonal partnership in church history. Luther, too, often and intensively dealt with the topic of marriage. However, his theological understanding of marriage can hardly be adequately understood or classified without its contextualization and contouring in the history of the church and theology. And it is precisely to this end that a cursory contribution will be made in the following.
