Description
Summary:Like the Theodosian walls of Constantinople, several 6th cent. Syrian fortifications (Halabiyyé, Zalabiyyé, Rusàfa and Antakya) are provided, in the upper floors of their towers, with arched recesses serving arrow-slits in the thickness of the walls. This architectural combination will be found afterwards in the late lOh or early 11th cent. Byzantine fortress of Sahyun, in the bourid fortification of Palmyra, in the Islamic towers built around Bosrâ theatre, in the Frankish keep of El Bâra, and in the majority of the following buildings.
