| Summary: | In the curse of Amos 1:5 against Damascus, Bet-'Eden is not a name for the Aramaic kingdom of Bit Adini which had disappeared many years before, but a place in the kingdom of Damascus. The Aramaic vocalization of 'Àwen: "iniquity" hides 'on, toponym held in the LXX and known as Heliopolis, centre of solar worship in Egypt, which may have given its name to Heliopolis in Lebanon, which is Baalbek. The Semitic root 'DN: "to be delicious" allows us to identify the place-name Paravdeiso FlapàSeiaoç, located in the upper Beqa' by Strabo and Ptolemaeus, with Bet-'Eden which therefore could be situated in the area of ElQa'. |
