| Summary: | O estudo do nepotismo no seio da Igreja Católica da Idade Média tem atraído alguns investigadores alemães, ingleses e italianos, mas no caso português são poucos os autores que mencionam esta prática, dedicando-lhe apenas vagas referências em obras de carácter geral. Actualmente, o conhecimento do uso deste costume pode trazer à luz do dia uma outra realidade para além da tradicional história política e institucional do Estado Pontifício. Pode revelar-nos outros canais de exercício do poder eclesiástico: os constituídos pelo complexo de relações sócio-políticas e culturais, tanto clientelares como familiares e, ainda, o extraordinário crescimento em influência dos grupos aristocratas junto da Cúria Papal ou em geral, pois para além dos sumos-pontífices, também cardeais, bispos, abades, cónegos e outros clérigos abundantemente o praticaram. Ainda que dentro de uma cronologia limitada, este artigo analisa o tema relativamente à sé de Braga, onde foi possível confirmar este poderoso poder relacional através de redes bem definidas como a dos Portocarreiro ou a dos Pereira. Some German, English or Italian searchers have been attracted by studying nepotism in the heart of the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages, but as for Portugal, there are just a few writers mentioning this practise by dedicating it only some indistinct references. Nowadays, knowing the use of this custom may bring to light another reality beyond the traditional political and institutional history of the Pontifical State. It can reveal other ecclesiastical power exercise channels, such as the ones being formed by the social-political and cultural relations complex, both from clients and relatives, and yet the extraordinary influence growth of the aristocratic groups by the Papal Court or in general, because besides pontiffs, also cardinals, bishops, abbots, canons and other clergymen had copiously exercised it. In spite of a narrow chronology, this article goes deeper searching about nepotism in the see of Braga, where is possible to testify this strong relational power through well defined nets, such as the Portocarreiro’s or the Pereira’s families. |
