Description
Summary:In a diverse society, the governance of religion is becoming complex. I ask in this article why and how sociologists of religion can contribute to this field. A networks approach to governance offers a fruitful platform for analysis, and several Nordic studies have applied such an approach. The article demonstrates how governance processes in Norway represent a good candidate for analysis from this perspective. A focus on analyses of language use adds another layer to understanding governance processes. Further, the networks perspective opens an awareness of different roles of research. Three roles of research contributions to governance processes are presented: expert knowledge, participation and analysis. The aim of the article is firstly to highlight a rich and interesting field for sociological research; secondly, reflection is needed on the how different roles of research impact governance of religion. The article illuminates both the advantage of having research resources within government and how research can be used in a biased manner.
