Description
Summary:This article examines two undated and little-known pamphlets published in England in the 1530s in the context of Henry VIII's Reformation: Agaynst the Possessyons of the Clergye, by Jasper Fyloll, and the anonymous Enormytees Vsyd by the Clergy. It argues that both are the work of Fyloll, and that they were published in 1532-33 in the context of the debate occasioned by the "supplication against the ordinaries" presented in the 1532 Parliament. It further argues that, by virtue of Fyloll's position in the service of Thomas Cromwell, these pamphlets should be seen as, if not official propaganda, then at least serving the purposes of the crown's agenda. Both treatises advance some concept of royal supremacy over the church and are profoundly anti-clerical in tone. They offer fascinating new evidence of the Henrician regime's readiness to foment anticlericalism and exploit the press in the furtherance of its political goals.
