Description
Summary:This is a brief investigation of Reformation hermeneutical links to the medieval exegetical tradition. The specific subject of comparison is Melchior Hoffman's Dat Boeck Cantica Canticorum and St. Bernard's Sermones in Cantica. Various channels carried the bernardine spiritual tradition into the sixteenth century. In Hoffman's case the glosses in the Lubeck Bible were most formative. It is suggested that the bernardine spiritual tradition, mediated through works of popular late medieval piety, contributed to and shaped Reformation spirituality.
