Description
Summary:In 1564, by order of Philip II, Juan de Ovando undertook a reform of the University of Alcala de Henares. Founded by Cardinal Francisco Jimenez Cisneros fifty years before, it was a center of clerical and humanistic education. Ovando studied every aspect of the university and revised its statutes and curriculum. This was the first step in a career that would later make him president of the Council of Finance and the Council of the Indies. The article surveys his work at Alcala and addresses the question of whether his reform was faithful to or a distortion of Cisneros's original vision.
