Summary: | This paper examines Sir Geoffrey Elton's major narrative histories of the era of the English Reformation, focusing on his theory of political history and narrative. There is a particular concern for Sir Geoffrey's ideas about what constitutes a completed action, his shift in plot forms between 1955 and 1977, and some ideological implications of his practice of narrative history. The analysis depends upon ascertaining the nature of the relationship between Elton's theory and practice and that of Ranke, with attention to Hegelian currents in their work. It applies also ideas derived from recent work in narrative theory in literature and history. |
