Description
Summary:Andreas Osiander's 1527 pamphlet Eyn wunderliche Weyssagung von dem Babstumb is a refashioned version of the late medieval, pseudo-Joachimite Pope Prophecies. Osiander discarded the text, he and the artist Erhard Schon reinterpreted and occasionally altered the images of the prophecies to fit his aim - Lutheran propaganda. The change in one image from the letter B into a fire-steel is here shown to be one instance of propagandistic change. The fire-steel was a politically charged symbol, being a personal device and imperial symbol for Charles V. By its inclusion, Osiander adds a call for unity between empire and Protestantism in the battle against the papacy.
