Summary: | During the French Wars of Religion, the city councillors of Chalons-sur-Marne consistently rebuffed attempts to enlist them in the Catholic League despite the fact that theirs was a predominantly Catholic city. The councillors also acted on occasion to protect the town's Huguenots from outside persecution. Both of these attitudes are rooted in the communal values of the bonne ville. From the beginning of the Wars, the councillors consistently pursued their own civic agenda, often in opposition to powerful external forces. The Catholic League was thus rejected as "foreign" and inimical to the town's values and the council's agenda. |
